Our history

Mrs. Ethel T. Wead Mick, 1881-1957,
founder of the International Order of Job's Daughters,

Mrs. Wead Mick wrote the Original Ritual and served as Supreme Guardian from 1921-1922

In the Introduction to the Book of Ritual, we find the following: "There is nothing more fitting to young women than the beautiful sentiment expressed in the Book of Job as exemplified in the ritualistic work, indicating that through life from early childhood to old age we encounter trials and tribulations which must be met and overcome.

The meeting place is called 'Bethel' which means 'Holy Place'. The Grecian Robe was worn by the people in the days of Job. The official regalia suggests a forward, upward and onward trend toward higher ideals.

What is the International Order

"And in all the land were no women found so fair as the Daughters of Job; and their Father gave them inheritance among their brethren."

The 42nd Chapter, 15th Verse, of the Book of Job

In 1920, Ethel T Wead Mick founded the International Order of Job's Daughters based on this verse and the teachings of Freemasonry to provide an opportunity for young women to work together, to learn about themselves and to help others. Today, Job's Daughters is a premier organization for girls who:

  • like making new and lasting friends
  • enjoy doing fun activities
  • want to help other people
  • learn valuable skills, such as leadership,
    self-confidence, and communication

The International Order of Job's Daughters is one of today's outstanding character-building organizations for young women who are related to a Master Mason. We can help you determine if there is a Master Mason in your family- you would be surprised how many families have Master Masons in their history and do not know it.

Job's Daughters teaches the time-tested principles of respect for parents and home, loyalty to flag and country, and reverence for God. We do not follow any specific religion, but do require that our members have a belief in God.

Job's Daughters plan and share a lot of fun activities.  We attend dances and activities around the province and do lots of other fun activities.

What is Job’s Daughters?

Job’s Daughters is an organization created to unite girls who share the common bond of a Masonic heritage. This enables them to learn leadership skills, organizational methods, and the importance of fulfilling individual responsibilities within a group. By planning their own activities, the members have fun doing what they want to do and at the same time create lasting friendships.

What is the purpose of Job’s Daughters?
The purpose of the International Order of Job’s Daughters is to promote love and friendship among young women. It gives its members the foundation on which to build the qualities needed to become leading, organizing, and contributing partners of society.

It broadens the horizons of young women by bringing them into contact with people from other cultures within the United States, Brazil, the Phillipines, Canada and Australia. Communication between the Masonic youth groups also allows for personal growth, bringing us friendships with the young men and young ladies of DeMolay and Rainbow.

What do Job’s Daughters do?
Job's Daughters offers something for everyone - activities ranging from athletics and dances to service projects and fun activities, giving each member a chance for participation and enjoyment.

Each group, called a Bethel, works to raise their own money through fund raisers varying from sandwich sales to designing and selling T-shirts. The members of Job's Daughters are able to voice their opinions as to how the money should be spent, as well as other business matters that come before the Bethel.

There are also activities accross the province full of fun and relaxation. All of these events are scheduled with a variety of fun activities such as volleyball games, dances with the DeMolays, crafts, and swimming. There is sure to be something for everyone - including you!

Who may join Job's Daughters?
Jobs Daughters is made up of young women who have relative who is a Master Mason. You may be the:

  • Daughter, Step-daughter, Adopted Daughter
  • Granddaughter, Step-granddaughter
  • Sister, Half-sister, Step-sister, Sister-in-law
  • Niece, Grand-niece
  • Cousin, Second Cousin
  • or any unmarried female relation of a Master Mason, who is between the ages of 10 and 20.
Our order does not stress any specific religious beliefs. It merely encourages belief and trust in God.

How do I join?
To join Job’s Daughters, you must complete a petition and submit it to a local Bethel. The petition will be read at a meeting, after which a few of the Bethel’s members will visit you and answer your questions about Job’s Daughters. Your initiation will be held shortly after the visit.

What happens after I petition?
An initiation into Job’s Daughters does not involve embarrassing rituals or tests of courage as to the infamous initiations of college and childhood clubs. Instead, it is a reverent and meaningful ceremony in which you are introduced to the life and trials of Job through the recitation of a five part story by Bethel officers.

After joining, all members are asked to attend meetings twice each month, excluding July and August, in order to plan activities and fund raisers, read petitions, and to initiate new members. They are also asked to attend various fun events and service projects; however, no member is asked to do things that interfere with family, school, or church events.

What special uniforms do Job's Daughters wear?
The regalia of Job’s Daughters is a Grecian robe that is worn by each member during Bethel meetings. It is symbolic of many emblems, ideas, and lessons of our order; however, above all, it symbolizes equality. This prevents the Order from becoming a club signifying social status and enables more people to be a part of our Order and learn from our lessons.
